This documentary explains the discovery of the Chauvet cave in 1994 and the scientific explorations of the cave since then. There are three levels of “art” on some of the surfaces: for instance, a cave bear clawing; then cave art from 30,000 years ago; then cave art from 20,000 years ago. The cave is sealed and only individuals with special permission(s) can enter. Since the Lascaux caves were closed in the 1960′s because of the disintegration caused by human presence (breath, molds, etc.), this cave will not be open to the public. In addition, when the scientist enters, s/he must wear special clothes and only walk on a metal walkway. S/he may not touch the walls.

The floor is covered with cave bear skulls and bones of other animals. The stalagmites and stalactites are enormous and beautiful in the poor, false light. But the art is extraordinary. When you look up “Chauvet Cave” on Wikipedia, they say that there were only two periods when humans populated this cave because the cliff moved and destroyed the original, natural opening. This fortunate turn of events also preserved the rock art in situ. What I found most interesting is that my understanding of archeological work has been (from movies mostly) that things are taken away and studied, rarely put back, but displayed in museums. It is a destructive, out of place, activity that doesn’t honor or respect the original site in many ways.

The work at Chauvet is quite different. Although they have carbon-dated tiny pieces of charcoal, it remains largely intact. Photographs and laser mapping are used to study this cave. You’ll see how they do much of it in the film. Enjoy!

Buck Buchanan was the model for Robert Redford’s movie, “The Horse Whisperer.” Buck comes from a line of horsemen, starting with Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt (who was his teacher). What I find most interesting about this line of teaching is that it is taught! People learned from these men how to work with horses using energy, “feel” as Buck puts it. It is not magic; but it is about emotion, heart—mind, intelligence (the horse’s and the human’s)—and body. Buck tells his audiences not to let their emotions carry them away . . . not to take out their emotions (or disappointment or frustration) on their animals. The horse (like dogs and cats—and some other domesticated species [goats, some cattle breeds, and others]) can sense a human’s energy (emotion) and read a human’s thoughts (mind). The trick is for the human to “read” the animal so that the communication is a two-way conversation. This is a very sweet film available instantly on Netflix.

Danny Glover and Kevin Kline play middle-aged men in Los Angeles whose lives intersect briefly one night in a bad neighborhood when Kline’s car breaks down and Glover tows the car to the garage. Mary McDonnell is Kline’s wife who finds a baby while she is jogging and believes it is a miracle she heard the baby crying. Kline plays matchmaker for Glover and Alfre Woodard, and it is a match made in heaven. The story revolves around a story Glover tells Kline on the first night about a trip to the Grand Canyon–where “the rocks were laughing at me and my troubles.” “We’re just a second in time compared to how long those rocks have been there.” A sweet, melancholy drama about life in the city of angels.

I was 9 years old in 1961 when the Freedom Riders movement was born. On the other hand, I was 17 years old when the Stonewall Uprising occurred in New York City. Both of these events were stunningly portrayed on PBS this month and are now available online.

Click here for the Freedom Riders documentary and click here for the Stonewall Uprising documentary.

Both of these events are seminal to my own consciousness raising as a White female from the South. Watching the Freedom Riders withstand the beatings, jail, mobs, and law enforcement who stood by aimlessly, and finally Parchman Prison in Mississippi, I couldn’t help but wonder if I would have joined, had I been a little older. And while I remember the Stonewall riots vaguely—that is, I remember them in the news—I wasn’t “out” in 1969. It is doubtful that I would have participated in any way. Still, I recognize the significance of each of these events.

I was completely unaware, for instance, that the Kennedys had their eyes on international affairs rather than on domestic ones and that the Freedom Rides really changed their point of view. All I remember is the outcome of that: The Civil Rights Act of 1963, John Kennedy’s eventual assassination, and Bobby’s following. Hailed as heroes, they were reluctant ones in 1961. The reluctance of Dr. Martin Luther King to join the Freedom Rides is one of those facts of history that was also hidden from my own reading until watching this movie.

I always thought the Stonewall Inn was a kind of high-priced, fancy gay bar; instead, it was mob-run, rundown, dark, and dreary. However, like so many gay bars, it was the only place to go besides the trucks. Ah, the trucks, where gay men went to have sex. Before the baths. Really? It sounds so dreary and awful. Lots of details in this documentary fill in the blanks of what it was really like in the 1950′s and 1960′s in and out of the bars. When I came out, my friends were always afraid for me to go to the bathroom by myself. They always accompanied me. Now I know why!

These are revealing and interesting films, and I love it that PBS makes them available online once they’ve shown on TV. Free!

This is a very disturbing film as the reviews on the Netflix page explain. However, I decided to brave watching every minute. I was not disappointed. Father Tom Doyle, a priest for over 30 years, deconstructs the strategies of the Roman Catholic diocese of Los Angeles and Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, as over 500 pedophile priests in California have been protected from prosecution. The Vatican is explicitly a part of this cover-up as Ratzinger was the person starting in the 1970′s who made sure early reports were misfiled, misremembered, etc. Along with Doyle are some of the victims and their families plus their lawyers who explain the legal machinations engaged in by the RC to misdirect law enforcement. This is a haunting film and worth every minute of it.

C. S. Lewis is probably rolling over in his grave over this movie version of the third book in the series of Chronicles of Narnia. I don’t know that he would have approved of some of the interpretations of his writing, but I do believe he would have approved of the message(s) of nobility, humility, compassion, and loyalty. I have always believed (and I think it was Lewis’ intention) that Aslan is the animation of the Christ or a Christed One. What I had not noticed before this movie is the inclusion of women as equal partners and participants. Lewis wrote these books in the 1930′s between “the great war” and the “war to end all wars” when women had earned the right to vote, but were still only accepted as teachers, nurses, and the occasional secretary. Women were not leaders. In this episode Lucy leads us to the magician who explains where they must go to find Evil and defeat it. [spoiler] Reepicheep is his usual regal self and earns the reward of going into Aslan’s Lands. The most adorable character is the cousin, Eustace, who transitions into a dragon and back again into a transformed and friendly boy-cousin.

I am reading Peter Appelbaum’s Children’s Books for Grown-Up Teachers (2008). One of the ideas is that modern children have no trouble identifying with magical or enhanced humans or humanized animals. All of the Chronicles are filled with animals that communicate, that fight, that befriend, all exhibiting human traits. The line between human and animal is blurred. The technology of magical swords is at the heart of this episode in the Chronicles, necessary within the epic challenge between Good and Evil.

The hidden curriculum of C. S. Lewis seems to be that if one resists temptation, Evil is banished, even if it takes a huge fight with a shape-shifting sea monster hidden in a green mist on an island to nowhere. I always recommend reading the books before seeing the movies, but even if you saw the movie first, go read the books. Your imagination will fill in where cinematography stops.

Broken Hill is available through the Spiritual Cinema Network. It is a story about an Australian teenager who lives in the outback on a sheep ranch owned by three generations of his father’s family, Harmony Station. His mother was a musician and her son, the main character, is as well. In fact, he is a composer. When he is driving t-posts into the hard ground, he hears music. He hears music everywhere. This is a must-see film.
